Abstract
A simple data link (SDL) protocol that is inherently scalable to high speeds and provides constant transmission is presented. SDL delineate frames based on using a length indicator field and header cyclic redundancy check rather than using a flag. The error control, delineation, and resynchronization mechanisms used by SDL are discussed and a link scrambler is designed to protect against malicious attacks that attempt to generate very low bit transaction density on the line. Additional link control functions are designed to make SDL suitable for next-generation multiservice networks.
