Effect of exit geometry on the flow characteristics of jet exhausts

Abstract
Flow measurements were made in non-circular slot jets of rectangular, elliptic, and triangular configurations under correctly expanded and underexpanded conditions, and the quantities like Pilot pressure and average shock-cell spacing were measured. The slot jets were found to have desirable mixing characteristics as indicated by the faster decay and shorter core length compared to corresponding nozzle jets. The variation of the non-dimensional shock-cell spacing with the fully expanded Mach number is in reasonable agreement with that predicted by Tam's theory for rectangular jets. The slots with sharp corners (rectangular and triangular slots) showed higher spreads than elliptic jets. © Freund Publishing House Ltd.
