Abstract
The present paper describes the different capabilities of non-contact laser radiation in sharpening conventional grinding wheels. These capabilities include laser dressing, laser declogging of loaded wheels and flexible dressing of grinding wheels. The feasibility of laser dressing was established by evaluating the performance of laser dressed Al2O3 wheel in wet grinding under severe grinding conditions in terms of grinding forces, G - ratio and work surface finish. Laser declogging of loaded wheels was assessed by declogging the stainless steel chips adhered on Al2O3 wheel by analysing the finish on the worksurface. Flexibility of laser dressing was demonstrated by scribing grooves in angular and axial direction with a special dressing arrangement. With such different capabilities, laser shows its promise as a versatile dressing tool for grinding applications.
