Abstract
A simplified method for the calculation of deflections of hipped hyperbolic paraboloid shell roofs is developed by treating the shell as tied arches in two perpendicular directions. The influence of shell rise, shell thickness, edge beam size and extensional rigidity of ties on the deflections are brought out. It is concluded that the extensional rigidity of the ties has considerable influence on the deflections and that in many practical cases of design the sizes to be provided for the ties are governed by stiffness and not by strength. © 1971.
