Abstract
This paper aims to explore the current state-of-the-art technology in Health Information System (HIS) that is designed to present the right information at the right place, at the right time to the user. The study made on this reveals that common available CBIR (Content based image retrieval) systems cannot guarantee a meaningful query completion when used within the medical context and hence results obtained are poor while retrieving medical images. Image Retrieval in Medical Application (IRMA) systems an enhanced CBIR systems, are the possible alternatives in future for such application. Also it has been inferred that integration of CBIR (IRMA approach) with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) will revolutionize the Health Information System (HIS). Various issues related to the implementation and further development have also been discussed for better understanding of the concepts. © 2003 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
