Abstract
Axisymmetric free vibrations of laminated conical shell frustra are studied. Love's first approximation shell theory is used. The materials of individual layers are considered to be specially orthotropic. A general arrangement of layers with respect to the middlesurface is considered. The Rayleigh-Ritz method of solution is usedin conjunction with displacements varying harmonically in the circumferential direction and expanded algebraically in the meridional coordinate. In addition to parametric studies involving the geometric parameters, the effects of layer arrangements and those of the coupling between bending and stretching are analysed. The boundary conditions considered are fully clamped, hinged or free edges. A Galerkin method of solution of the differential equations of motion, for the shells with fully clamped edges, is given for comparison with the energy analysis. Use of a finite-element technique, employing eight-noded isoparametric solid of revolution elements, indicates good agreement with the results of the present analysis. © 1981, Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company.
