Thermal Aspects during Machining of High Silica/Phenolic Ablative Composites

Abstract
High Silica/phenolic composites are used for high performance applications, due to their high strength and temperature resistant properties: however, they pose considerable problems while machining to attain near net shape. This paper presents a study of thermal effects occurring during face turning of such composites. The temperature at the cutting zone was measured by an infrared pyrometer. A critical range of temperature have been identified at which, the specific cutting pressure during machining is almost steady. Modelling of temperature using log linear multiple regression analysis and artificial neural network (ANN) were carried out for precise prediction of temperatures and control of machining parameters if necessary during machining. These techniques showed close matching of estimated and directly measured values.
