Abstract
Optical absorption spectrum of cesium bromide doped with MnO 42− ion shows five bands. All these above bands are interpreted in terms of transitions within molecular orbital levels using the Ballhausen‐Liehr scheme. It is observed that, superposed on the electronic transition associated with the band at 6000 Å, there is a vibrational fine structure which arises due to the coupling between the electronic transition and the totally symmetric stretching vibration of the ion. The IR absorption spectrum of specpure CsBr:MnO 42− shows four lines which are interpeted on the basis of different local symmetries of MnO 42− ion in the lattice.
