Abstract
The optimum design problem for structural systems operating in random vibration environments is formulated with constraints on system response parameters such as stresses, acceleration, fatigue damage, system natural frequencies and side constraints on design variables. The problem is reduced to a nonlinear programming problem and solved using the sequential unconstrained minimization technique of Fiacco and McCormick. Three examples are presented to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed formulation. The paper provides an algorithm for automated optimum design of structural systems subjected to random excitation. © 1978, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
