Abstract
The construction of the road tunnel is inherent risk prone, and managing the safety at the construction site is a critical task. In this study, we present detail of construction safety management of two road tunnels in India—(i) Chirwa Ghat twin tunnel of length 910 m near Udaipur and (ii) Kuthiran twin tunnel (length 1980 m) in Kerala. Firstly, we discuss the basic requirements of tunnel safety and then the methods used for risk assessment in working conditions. We observe insufficient attention on the basic requirement of tunnel safety and the partial non-compliance of safety provisions mentioned in the Project Safety Plan (PSP). Thus, many incidents and accidents happened in both tunnels. This study gives an insight into safety management and finds the areas of improvement in tunnel safety during construction in India.
