Abstract
Subra Suresh describes how universities power innovation and spur economic growth. These are drivers of economic growth, locally, regionally, and nationally. The example of Pittsburgh shows how the kinds of industry that evolve, the industries that emerge from university research, can transform a regional economy. Through the basic research they support, universities can transform national and regional economies in a very powerful way, and therefore transform the fates of cities. In Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon has been a particularly powerful engine of innovation.
