This paper reviews research on issues relating to the acoustical problems faced in today's classrooms. Areas covered include factors affecting speech intelligibility such as background noise levels/SNR, reverberation and other architectural factors and the effects of this on child's academic performance. This paper also includes a comparative study of some of the current acoustical standards for classrooms and points out the need for such standards in a country with a tropical climate like India.
