Abstract
The influence of the Lorentz force imposed during solidification on the structure of Al-4% Cu Alloy has been studied. Castings were poured and allowed to solidify under the influence of Lorentz force in CO2 - sand moulds. Macro-structure of some of the test castings solidified with and without the influence of Lorentz force is described. Metallographic examination indicates that there is an increase in the equiaxed zone accompanied by an extensive refinement of the grain size. The imposed Lorentz force enhances the convective flow rate and creates conditions in the melt which favour the development of different structures in the casting.
