Abstract
Huge quantities of coal ash produced from thermal power plants are disposed in slurry form into lagoons or ponds covering several square kilometer area. The ash in lagoons, called pond ash, is in saturated and loose condition, and liable to liquefy during earthquake. In order to rehabilitate abandoned ash pond, it is therefore, necessary to evaluate the liquefaction potential of pond ash. Present study includes a laboratory investigation on evaluation of liquefaction potential of pond ash. Simplified procedure has been used to evaluate the extent of liquefaction in an ash deposit under different earthquake magnitudes.
