Abstract
Surface treatment by laser and electron beam irradiation results in significant improvement in fatigue crack growth resistance of alloy steels and Armco iron. The beneficial effect is due to extensive crack closure as a result of compressive residual stresses introduced during surface treatment. The crack growth is structure sensitive at low ΔK levels.
