Abstract
Investigations have been carried out to study the inelastic deformation and fatigue failure of low- and medium-carbon steels in the life range of 104 to 106 cycles. The total energy obsorbed has been found to depend on the applied stress and is not a materal constant. The cyclic-strain-hardening coefficient has been found to be nearly equal to the normal-strain-hardening coefficient and the cyclic deformation can be predicted from the normal S-N curve. © 1977 Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc.
