Abstract
It is essential to formulate clear and unambiguous procedures for system restoration after major blackouts. Specially designed status and guidance consoles which clearly display not only the current status of the system but also suggest possible restorative actions are very helpful for the operator. Thus algorithms based on sound mathematical principles which can detect island formations and their delineation, evaluate the effect of system additions island-wise, support the decision-making process of the operator to a great extent. This paper deals with some of the analytical tools that can be employed for recognizing the islands, a systematic coloring scheme to delineate the islands, as well as the application of partial matrix factorization techniques for quick evaluation of the effect of system additions.
