Abstract
The advantages of higher phase order (HPO) drives have been reviewed, and the results of the investigations of a five-phase inverter-fed induction motor are presented. Methods of improving the waveform of the motor phase current in the five-phase drive have been examined theoretically as well as experimentally. A mathematical model based on complex symmetrical components has been developed for theoretical investigations, and a prototype five-phase inverter-fed induction motor drive has been fabricated to conduct experimental studies. The results of the theoretical and experimental investigations under various operating modes are presented. The studies have established that the five-phase drive operates satisfactorily when fed from a pulse-width-modulated inverter. © 1988 IEEE
