Biomethanation from Wastewaters using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) Process

The state-of-the-art of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor operation is highlighted. Factors governing the start-up and their limiting values for treating low and high strength wastewaters are discussed. Reliability under heavy metal concentrations in substrate, and stability under highly fluctuating loading rates are reviewed.
