Experimental investigations on drag characteristics of kattumarams

The drag characteristics of kattumarams, the basic sea crafts, and performance of these crafts have not been so far studied scientifically. Experimental studies were carried out to predict the drag characteristics of two types of kattumarams, made of wood and high density polyethylene (HDPE). Model tests were conducted in the towing tank of dimensions of 82 m × 3.2 m × 2.5 m. During the experiments, it was observed that HDPE kattumaram experienced more drag at high speeds, as compared to wooden kattumaram. This indicates that the hull form and dead weight are the main parameters which influence the drag of the kattumarams significantly.
