Abstract
The static strength of interference fitted assemblies has been assessed using an Universal Testing Machine by conducting experiments for heat treated components under varied conditions. A significant improvement in strength is observed by soaking the assemblies at elevated temperatures. As there are many factors that influence the static load bearing ability, a suitable design of experiments has been planned and performed varying selected parameters. An attempt is made to develop a relation for evaluating the strength by fitting an equation using statistical regression methods. This equation is the improved version over the Lame's formula for evaluating the strength and is developed by comparing the experimental results. Of the two methods used for this purpose namely log-linear regression analysis and group method of data handling technique, the later method is found to be comparable to the experimental results in estimating the load carrying capacity as it makes use of self-organising methods. This method is particularly suitable to this problem as it involves large number of parameters.
