Abstract
A novel solution phase process by which carbon onions were formed within silica shells was discussed. It was observed that the confinement of carbon formed within the nano shells forced its conversion to onions. It was suggested that part of the carbon formed may leach out due to larger porosity of the shells. It was found that this method could be modified to create materials in which molecules are trapped within onions.
