Abstract
One expects of an intelligent entity to solve problems as also to communicate the solution and the necessary reasoning behind it cogently. Problem solving may itself take several generic forms, for example it could be knowledge based or search based. Moreover the communication goals may be independent of the problem solving goals but still derive their content from the problem solving activity. Putting such different skills together to form an intelligent problem solver offers several challenges. The present paper reports a part of our ongoing work with such a motivation. Route communication is chosen as a candidate problem for our study. Looking at it from a pure problem solving view it has one sub-activity in route finding. From the perspective of natural language generation it is the route description. Both these problems in isolation and in combination have been studied earlier by various people. While drawing upon their work we diverge from it in our motivation.
