Abstract
Dual two-level inverter and the open-end winding induction motor (OEWIM) drive arrangement offers the flexibility to generate multilevel voltage phasor across the stator windings of the motor. In this paper, a current controller based field oriented control (FOC) method for speed control of OEWIM is proposed. By exploring various available switching combinations of the dual-inverter, several combinations are thoughtfully selected and exploited in this work that allows complete common mode voltage (CMV) elimination in the motor drive. The control structure of the proposed FOC with CMV elimination is greatly simplified as it uses simple two-level hysteresis bang-bang controllers for the control of the dual inverter system thus making the control simple to understand and easy to implement. With the proposed FOC method of OEWIM, the torque dynamics are improved. The performance of the closed loop speed control of the OEWIM drive is thoroughly analyzed and tested with the use of the proposed FOC method using MATLAB-Simulink. The ruggedness of the proposed FOC control is demonstrated under starting, load change and speed reversal conditions, to validate the proposition.
