Abstract
A brief introduction to mathematical modeling, giving its definition, types and potential of applications, is presented. Drawing several illustrative examples from iron and steel industry, e.g. design of a cooling system for the sub-hearth of a blast furnace, combined blowing in steel converters, ladle metallurgy, continuous casting tundish design, continuous casting mold design for a slab caster, continuous casting of sheets by 'Single Roll Process', the key role that mathematical modeling can play in improving existing technologies and developing the new ones is discussed.
