Abstract
Function cognates are those mechanisms that provide exactly the same relationship between the displacements of the input and output links as in the original mechanism. Similar function cognates of the RSRC mechanism (i.e. original and cognate of the same type) are investigated using an algebraic method. The motion relationship considered is that between the rotations in the input revolute pair and output cylindric pair. The mechanism is found to posses one and only one function cognate. The cognate obtained consists of an unaltered RS crank and reflection of the rest of the mechanism on the plane through the spheric pair centre, normal to the cylindric pair axis. © 1987.
