Abstract
Modelling of a Tonpilz type, single ended, two element, magnetostrictive transducer is done using the equivalent circuit method. The essential inputs for the modelling such as the input impedance of the experimental transducer, compliance of the active elements, material characteristics of the active elements, mechanical properties of the other components of the transducer have been either measured or obtained from the design parameters or from literature. The transmitting current response (TCR) has been calculated from the model and is compared with the experimental values. Using the model, the resonance frequency of a Tonpilz type, three element magnetostrictive transducer has been predicted to be less than that of the two element transducer and the TCR to be 3.5 dB more than that of the two element transducer at the resonance frequency.
