Photocatalytic reduction of nitrite and nitrate ions to ammonia on ZnO-Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> coupled semiconductor

Coupling of a stable short bandgap semiconductor to an unstable large bandgap semiconductor can be used for sensitization as well as prevention against photocorrosion. Relatively efficient photoassisted reduction can be realized on these systems without the need of a noble metal catalyst.
