Abstract
In this study the immobilization of nitrifying biofilm was performed in a laboratory scale cross flow medium tricking filter system. The influent and effluent parameters, such as ammonium nitrogen, alkalinity and pH were monitored for a period of two months. It has been observed that nitrification rate increases as treatment time increases and attains a steady state after about 40 day. The nitrifiers are autotrophic bacteria that requires inorganic carbon for their cell synthesis. Sodium bicarbonate was added to the feed as an inorganic carbon source. The effluent alkalinity concentration was significantly affected throughout the start-up period. © 2003 - Kalpana Corporation.
