Abstract
The research interest in noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) has grown tremendously in recent years due to their wide range of applications in material as well as biological sciences. NCs are associated with inherent molecule-like behaviour due to their precise composition and structure, discrete energy levels, interparticle reactions, etc. The extensive use of nanoclusters is limited due to their stability issues under ambient conditions. To circumvent this, NCs have been transformed into 2D and 3D long-chain porous coordination polymers or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using suitable organic linkers. Successful integration of NCs and organic linkers has been demonstrated in MOFs, and such materials have received a lot of research interest recently. This Chapter will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterizations of NC-based MOFs and their properties. NC-based MOFs gained importance due to their stability, porous nature, and efficient luminescence as compared to the pristine silver NCs. Many MOFs have been successfully embedded into a polymer matrix while retaining the unique features of the framework in the matrix for their applicability in optoelectronic devices. An interesting feature in flexibility and dynamic behaviour in the framework structure of some MOFs has been observed upon solvent interactions. Tunable properties of MOFs depend on the structure and number of metal atoms in NC nodes, functionalization, and nature of the organic linker.
