Abstract
Battery chargers are making a crucial contribution to the fast adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). They are categorized into onboard and off-board chargers according to whether they are placed inside or outside the PEV. Onboard battery chargers have become more popular as they do not need additional infrastructure and are directly charged from the alternating current (AC) supply through electric vehicle supply equipment. This chapter is mainly focused on past and recent technological developments of dedicated onboard charger (OBC) topologies. The performance of the 3.3 kW OBC topology consisting of a conventional and interleaved boost converter as a power factor correction (PFC) stage and a phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter as a galvanic isolation stage is analysed through case studies in the MATLAB/Simulink platform. Finally, a comparative analysis is presented between the boost PFC-based and interleaved boost PFC OBC topologies.
