Abstract
The prospects of electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to useful and value added chemicals at appropriate electrode surfaces have been examined. The obtainable product distribution is shown to be dependent on the nature of electrode surfaces. The difficulties of the activation of carbon dioxide and the requirement of high over potential for electrochemical reduction have been brought out. The necessity of carbon dioxide activation with reduction in bond angle has been emphasized. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
