Abstract
The exponential growth of personal vehicles, combined with an increase in trips and trip lengths, has resulted in acute road traffic congestion in most metropolitan cities around the world. A few reasons for congestion are higher demand rates, inadequate infrastructure, accidents, and construction. However, the most common reason is the traffic capacity supplied by traffic facilities being close to or less than the traffic demand. In recent years, the focus of congestion reduction has shifted from infrastructure and capital-intensive transportation strategies to more balanced and sustainable transportation solutions such as using Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
