Abstract
Flow visualization techniques help us understand qualitatively and quantitatively flow behavior in systems. The system walls have to be optically transparent for visualization. These methods require a good knowledge of optics, hydrodynamics, mathematics as well as electronics. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to understand the quantitative spatiotemporal variations a the flow. It can give excellent spatial as well as temporal resolution. In this chapter, we discuss the basics of flow visualization from a theoretical and a practical view point and present results of PIV on a two-phase gas-liquid flow system. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media LLC.
