Abstract
A new optical method of image subtraction by employing a holographic shear lens is proposed. The principle underlying this technique is that of optical interference between two sheared fields produced by the holographic shear lens (HSL). Two dissimilar inputs with some common characters are subtracted in real time while keeping the HSL at the Fourier plane of a well corrected lens. The difference is detectable only when zero fringe is obtained in the interferogram. Experimental verification is presented with the results. The basic advantages of this technique are the simplicity in aligning the input transparencies and the real time operation. © 1985.
