Abstract
Biocatalysis is known to aid the sustainability of chemical process and plays a key role in modern organic synthesis. Nevertheless, toxicity of the solvents employed contributed to the “ungreener” side. Search for alternative solvents to organic solvents were quite successful at the time and that was applied in biocatalysis as well. This chapter discuss about switchable and tunable solvents that assisted the downstream processing besides environmental consciousness. CO2-triggered property changes in the solvents are presented here along with common examples. Further focus is on the selected applications of each class of solvent system in catalysis, specifically biocatalysis. Switchable solvents are less explored for the typical field but can be considered as an excellent nonconventional media.
