Abstract
In spite of exhaustive investigations in the past many characteristic features of the built-up edge phenomenon are not clearly understood. Mechanisms of its formation, build-up and break-up are still shrouded in controversy. Cutting tests on a plain carbon steel with carbide employing an explosive quick-stop device to freeze cutting action reveal some interesting facts on built-up edges. Based on these observations and on the current information available on this topic, an attempt is made to elucidate the main features of this complex phenomenon. Also significant form, stability and structural aspects are presented and discussed. © 1971.
