Abstract
Even though stress corrosion is assumed to be the major cause of failure in steam turbine condenser tubes, corrosion fatigue failures have been reported'). Corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion have come to be regarded as two distinct phenomena involving corrosion and stress that have some features in common but also important points of difference ). In corrosion fatigue, the stresses involved are cyclic or alternating, and therefore always applied or operating stresses, whereas in stress corrosion the stresses are static and may be either applied or internal. In cases where there is a very slow variation of stress, it is sometimes difficult to decide whether corrosion fatigue or stress Corrosion is involved.
