Abstract
Instability of a vertically accelerated horizontal two-dimensional interface between a liquid and air is found to be a singular perturbation problem and is solved by the method of strained coordinates. A third-order theory presented here completely alters the predictions of the linear theory, seeks to remove the defects in a previous non-linear theory and explains the experimental observations. The growth of disturbance occurs even at the critical wave-number predicted by the linear theory. © 1970, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN. All rights reserved.
