Abstract
Research and development on engineering ceramics has resulted in the generation of toughened ceramics and ceramic-ceramic composites having a high reliability. The addition of Al2O3 (20 wt%) to ZrO2 matrix has resulted in a ceramic-ceramic composite of higher-order fracture toughness and fracture strength. The main field of application of such engineering ceramics and ceramic-ceramic composites is in tribological applications including cutting tools. This requires a good surface finish and dimensional tolerance. To meet this, efficient and precision machining technologies are needed. Diamond abrasive machining of such ceramic-ceramic composites has resulted in a surface with good texture and finish.
