Abstract
The authors report findings on effects of some low-frequency alternating magnetic fields in improving the physiological response to stress and in the management of some psychosomatic conditions. The biochemical and electrophysiological profiles indicate a decrease in sympathetic and a corresponding increase in parasympathetic tone in individuals exposed to alternating magnetic fields at 0. 01, 0. 1, 1, 10, and 20 Hz and amplitudes of plus or minus 5 nT and plus or minus 50 T. Further, the calcium/sodium concentration after exposure as compared to preexposure levels point to a calcium washout from the site of exposure. Thus, the magnetic fields seem to alter the membrane dynamics at the cellular level. Hence, both central and local cellular mechanisms are implicated in the exposures studied in these cases.
